What's wrong with this drive?

I have had several drives go this way. The arm which holds the heads will click back and forth for a while then stop. This will repeat itself until I turn off the power. the disk is not recognized by any machine or utility. What is bad: The main board? The arm controller inside? The heads? If I were to replace the main board from an identical model drive, would I be able to salvage the data?

That is the drive-built-in read-error correction routine. The drive has encountered a read error on the platters and is retrying. This usually indicates a completely hosed drive.

That's what I was afraid of. I was hoping to be able to patch it long enough to scavange the drive.
