I just reformated and installed windows 98 and ever since then I can't get my modem set-up with the correct driver. I have tried a new modem but the same result. The error is that the modem might not be pluged in or turned on. I have it set to com2 but it's an internal modem. Help would be greatly appreciated Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

Is it listed in Device Manager? Can you query the modem (Control Panel -> Modems -> More Info)? Querying the modem will verify whether it's alive and what COM port it's on. You can also try using a different PCI slot on your motherboard...

I have tried changing the pci slot, i have checked it out on system device manager. When i tried re-installing it and letting windows find it, windows couldn't find it. Any help? Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

check in the DM to see if there are any conflicts with any other devices on if so you may have to manually configure the card so there are none

another thing I like to check is when the PC starts up it is recognized during the boot process by the System

when you get the black screen with the table looking thing at the top of the screen just before the logo screen comes up hit the pause break button then check for the card there

How would I manually configure the card? Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

Everytime I reboot the computer it keeps re-detecing the modem so I have like 9 in the device manager when I reboot 9 times...whats going on? Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

well you have to delete all the ones that are in there now
but it is good that it is auto detecting, what I would do is try to install the driver in ther hardware wizard but you will probally have to force the OS to accept the driver for the card

Start by removing all instances of your modem from the device manager. Reboot and reinstall it just once.

Question 1: When Windows detects the modem, does it launch an install wizard which gives you the option to specify the location of the modem drivers?

- If so, then are you installing the drivers that came with the modem?

Question 2: After the modem drivers install, have you gone to "Control Panel -> Modems" to see its configuration?

- You should be able to get important info like the COM port # on the Diagnostics tab. Also remember to go to try hitting the "more info" button on the COM port to see if it can communicate.

No Problem! Just curious though, did you figure out what was wrong or did it just start working?
