What's the difference between these 3 flavours of MOSS:
Office SharePoint Server 2007
Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search Standard
Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search Enterprise

Seems to me that if you don't want extensive search capability initially and on't need access to the BDC and records management, you can get away with the basic MOSS server for much much cheaper ?!

There are actaully 4 versions of MOSS....

MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search Standard Edition
MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search Enterprise Edition
MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard
MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise.

The two Search Editions do not include the People Search functionality (which also includes the integration with Knowledge Network for MOSS 2007), Business Data Catalog, or the enhanced Search Center with customizable tabs.
The document limit is 500,000 for MOSS 2007 for Search Standard Edition, while the other versions don't have limits.
Also MOSS 2007 Enterprise allows you to search structured data sources, while the other versions do not.

So,

1/
If you don't need the ability to search documents on other intranets, internet sites, or data systems using the BDC, then you don't need a version of MOSS Search, you can get away with the standard server + standard/enterprise CAL?

2/
If you want search capability, do you have to buy both MOSS for Search AND the MOSS 2007 server?
...along with all the hardware/software for indexing, etc.?

3/
Can the MOSS Search server be configured to search existing network folders/file stores while they are gradually moved over to MOSS? If so, does it just do this by document name or can it search within the document?

Cheers.
