Howdy y'all,

Don't have the cmos password for the system.

Looking for someone to tell me the most reliable cracker for use.

I tried using all the default passwords for the award. None work.

Seems a bit messy to do the jumper thing to clear the cmos password considering i have no documentation on the original pc and motherboard. I just want in pass the cmos password to install a new hd. It isn't being seen. It won't plug and play.
I don't wish to pull the battery either for same reasons.

I'm worried about which cmos "cracker" to use. I don't want to use bad code and complicate anything.

Does someone know of a good cracker that is reliable??

thank you kindly for your time and attention,
ptt :)

Killcmos seems to be ok, I have used it several times but it has much the same effect as clearing the CMOS, you lose your user settings. I am afraid I don't have a link to it but a google search will turn it up. Note that most virus scanners will detect it as a trojan or virus. Don't be alarmed its just apeculiarity of the code used, there is no virus.
If you have any trouble with BIOS settings try due to lack of documentationthe mobo manufacturers web site. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

Hi,
Good to know. I never knew about that one.

i did a search a while back for cmos crackers and came up with a bunch. They aren't suppose to clear the cmos settings just crack the password. I have never used these crackers and was looking for someone who actually used the crackers that don't clear the settings. I need it to be clean and safe as this is not my machine.

thanks for the input

Sorry about the somewhat garbled post above (#2) I was in a hurry and distracted...
Really I would just clear the CMOS, it is the safest way. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

I don't have the original cmos settings.
can't get them.
won't that be a problem?

The main setting in CMOS that you may have to change are date/time, IDE configuration and maybe PnP OS or not. Unless the board is very old it will autodetect the IDE devices, as for all the other settings, go through and have a look but the defaults and autodetected settings are usually fine. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

The best way to remove the CMOS Password - On the motherboard there will be a jumper across 2 pins say for arguements sake 1-2 now to remove the password all you have to do is move the jumper to sit over pins 2-3.

The Motherboard Manual should tell you where there located alternativley look on the motherboard and look for any writing that says clr cmos or cmos password.

Hope that helps Kind Regards

If you can't find the jumper and don't want to use the KillCMOS:

Unplug the machine
Take the battery out
Wait a few hours

Your CMOS should be cleared.

I use cmospwd.exe and have never had any trouble. The worst it has ever done is offered me no help (but that was only a couple of times).

I always run it from a boot floppy (have never tried it from within windows), but this requires that the boot order is set to boot from floppy.

It will give you several suggestions--look at the ones for your particular BIOS manufacturer. Chances are, you will see the appropriate one immediately. If not, write down some ideas and give them a try.

If memory serves me, you can find it at as cmspwd15.zip Mudskipper

Here is an easy way to clear the cmos without cracking the case open. Run a "clear CMOS" debug string such as the one found here: I've ran these strings hundreds of times without any disasters or crashes. Boot into dos with a bootdisk to do this.

If you don't want to do the jumper, or use a CMOS reset program it is possible to remove the little battery that is on the motherboard. Leave it out overnight and then put it back in. This will usually reset the BIOS also. That battery is what powers the BIOS so it can keep the time/date and usually the password when the computer is off. This method doesn't always work, but I've had it work on about 80% of the motherboards I've worked on.

Click here (or copy and paste into browser):

Once downloaded double click it and it will create a bootable floppy disk which will crack the cmos password. All you have to do is make a note of the bios manufacturer (in this case Award) and let it do its job.

I'll be honest and say I have never used it but please let us know if its succesful.

And if you dont want to clear your CMOS settings (although I dont know why, you wont lose anything. It just defaults back to factory settings) then dont remove the battery.
