What's the best way to brand your portal?

I am on a sharepoint deployment project and need to figure out the best way to brand our portal. I've only been playing around with sharepoint for a couple days now and the best resource I found so far was the following:

Now that article only dabbles in portal customization and leaves out quite a bit. Basically I want to know the best, easiest to maintain way of branding my portal. Right now it looks like editing all the aspx and a custom css file is the way to go.

well here are my 2 cents(euro) so that would be 2.44 $ cents.

But i went the way you suggested your self, by editting all the original template files and by the use of a custom theme.
this makes sure that all new pages have the same look and feel... (and should load faster then pages edited in frontpage as they are "ghosted")

There is not much to say for it...

But themes can only be applied to WSS sites not portal sites . . .
