Running Windows 98 SE. When I run the sysyem monitor it shows something is running in the background at regular intervals that uses 34% processor usage. I am running the minimum at startup: Explorer, Systray and point32 (mouse). What else could be using the processor?

Task Manager.. your anti-virus program doing a real-time scan..

Thanks for the reply, but I used System Mechanic to disable taskmon.exe at startup. Could it still be running?

Click on the My Computer icon and select "Task Manager"

Now, click on the "Advanced" tab .. If you see "Stop using Task Manager".. It is still running..

If you stop it, be prepared to do manual upgrades for your av program !!

IF you have MS Office apps, it installs Find Fast Indexing.
Toss it.

Go to the following page and d/l and install Wintop.

With this program you can identify all processes that

are running and the % of cpu cycles each is using. Once

you know what process it is then take whatever steps you

find are necessary.
