What's a good doorway generator to use?

Doorway pages are against the TOS of all search engines.
they will get your domain penalised so heavily in Google you'll never find it again.
There has been several threads on SEO forums of domains that have been dumped recently because of cloaking and doorway pages.
The SE algos are now much better at detecting this spam crap.

Is it smart to make a site map page then instead, that holds keywords? I've read a lot about this also but I'm not quite sure. A friend of mine recently made a website that searches well and I've noticed he has a sitemap.

A sitemap can be useful, especially if you use java(script) navigation techniques that search spiders won't be able to follow. But there's no magic bullet that'll give you high rankings.
If your friend's site ranks high, it's because it's got some useful content that's of interest to people. Search engine algorithms are intended to pick out such sites - although they do so imperfectly. You can use tricks like doorway pages to fool them for a while, but you're much better off building a decent attractive site that people will want to visit, stay at, and pay money to. Search engine spiders don't have credit cards.

I understand search engines don't have credit cards, but what good is a site that doesn't search? Does anyone find it useful to use paid or sponsored listings with google and yahoo?

if your site can't be searched/crawled then you have something fundamently wrong with the navigation.
if it doesn't rank well then optimising the site is the way to go. doorway pages will give a short term boost but the risks are much higher than the short term gain IMO.
you are much better creating a site that is good for visitors (real people) and strangely enough, if it's good for visitors the SEs like it as well.
