Can anyone explain what a _variant_t is?

A _variant_t object encapsulates the VARIANT data type. The class manages resource allocation and deallocation, and makes function calls to VariantInit and VariantClear as appropriate.

I believe there is also a restriction on that type of 255 characters. I ran into this problem a while back when I wrote a mail merge program integrated with a database. I ended up having to HEAVILLY abreviate my fields for the merge.
