Hi all,

Just want to know what you would think if you hit a site that uses Paypal as their payment method...

If you were like, huh? Paypal? what is that? Go ahead and post that. Or if you were like, oh, Paypal cool, let me go ahead an log in...etc..then let me know, so that I would know how many people will actually know/trust and buy from a site that uses Paypal as their payment method.

Please advice, thanks in advance!

Hi,

Personally I don't care if sites like paypal come up. Think of it as a convience to you to be able to use a CC and not have to pay cash or post a cheque. As long as the site is secure (https) and not in frames and says it is the authorized payment processor for the site you are purchasing from and explains their security, has a valid certificate etc then I could care less who the payment processor is.

Also as a webmaster myself I like being able to use such services as paypal to accept CC payments without needing to get a special mastercard and visa account and go through all that hassle.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Nate for your input! The phrase "Also as a webmaster myself..." reminds me of something I would like to ask...(maybe I should start a new thread on that) have you had any experience with MCSD(Microsoft certified solution developer)? I am planning to get that certification so I would just like to know what is the MCSD like... is it hard...etc...etc.

Is there some problem that you are thinking of?

Unless you are pulling in big bucks, Paypal takes a much smaller cut of the money you receive.

Thanks Nate, thanks Kjonnnn for the reply!

kjonnnn: Well I was just thinking, if you hit a site that has to pay with Paypal and you don't have a Paypal account, will you go through the trouble of signing up a new a account with Paypal just so that you can purchase an item from that site? (I am thinking this in terms of my customer's view)

Please advice.

Thanks in advance!

Probably would make difference on what site it is.

I see what you a saying. I wouldn't expect Amazon to be using paypal because I be thinking "dont they have enough money to have their own shopping cart"?

I dont send money over the net to sites I don't know their credibility. But if you're thinking from the Fraud standpoint, and somebody correct me, would it be easier to trace a payment thru paypal, a 3rd party, or thru the shopping cart on a fraudulent site.

The times I've used Paypal its been to donate or contribute, not purchase anything.

paypal is a great way to start.....if u encounter many sales then u must consider server side on the PayPal menaing if u like faster processing then create an account with the bank...
All the best!

PayPal is very reliable and well put together. They are a great resource for paying and for receiving payment. I have used them often for both and I think they are solid.

As far as someone having to "sign up" to use PayPal...that is part of the whole paying Online thing anyway. That should not be considered an inconvenience.

Plus they don't NEED a credit card with PayPal. People can sign up and they can pay right from their checking account. Excellent.

Lots of people see Paypal and say "ugh" because they're forced to signup instantly killing sales. An alternative would be to use a cc processor that doesn't force anything...but simply processes the card, period. Some include:
Authorize.net
Paysystems
WorldPay

LOL @/w zoobie....so typeing your CC,name, address, phone is not "signing up"...I would rather sign up than have to re-send my CC numbers over and over and over

above all I think it depends on the store...and type of business...
eg. ordering stamps/envelops wiill be pruchase that happends "almost" on regular_.monthly basis....
buying a radiator for '67 Ford Mustang will happend....hmm 1 time (in this case I don't mind not being "signed up")
...then again my friends gramma hates to even scroll :)

All the best!

Not so...Paypal first makes you signup, add your bank numbers and creditcard numbers...then you have to go to your email to verify your user email and click on a link, then try to find your way back to where you were, etc. etc. etc....Total sales killer.

The ones I mentioned are superior because they charge a small setup fee ($25 or so) and take less out for their "cut"...Trust me...I've checked them all out.

At the very least, if you're planning on doing some serious biz with creditcards, at least give your users a couple of options....say, WorldPay and Paypal.

.....yeah I know...I just hate paying for something that I don't use [ eg. sign up for an account with bank and pay monthly free...that is more than my profit of the site....I would always start small like paypal....( its been a while since I used it...but it was not that painful...I can't remember if I had to link-link-link-link approach the purchase)
and I must agree OPTIONS are much better then just to A or B.
All the best!

Not only that...but PayPal has a huge security hole. If you simply look at the button code, you can make your own page with whatever price you'd like or shortcut to the "return" page and download whatever is being sold without paying a penny. You must use a serverside language to avoid these ripoffs. Their paypal developers network site is just filled with people trying to sell you their security scripts with no real help available. I finally figured it out myself.

Thanks Lebisol, thanks zoobie for the reply!

Excellent observation/comments from you guys! Thank you! [smile] The reason why I was asking this question was because I've just been picked up by Google like a month ago and I have 2 to 3 thousand visitors a day, yet I have NO sales!!! So I was wondering what was wrong with my site, I thought Paypal was the problem, I don't know.... Anyways thanks for all your help again! [smile]

JoJoH,
Can you use 2 payment systems on your site? Would be intresting to see how this reflects on your sales, plus this would let your customers choose a more suitable paym.sys. for them. :)))
Also, is it the site that is in your signature?

Marianne

before you send a user to paypal to pay you should have created a partial invoice of the order about to be placed. when the return page comes page (or you can catch the discreps in the ipn proc) you should compare the ammount paid to the amount listed in the invoice. if things don't match up, you need to let the user know that there was an error in the order and you will contact them.

if you are selling downloadables, you should do the same thing before redirecting the user to a downloads page. a one time use password is good too use too.
