What will happen if open source wins?

I just read microsofts SEC filing where they stated that open source is a threat to their business model, and it made me think.

If open source wins, will there be no more high paying computer programming jobs? Will CS majors be out of luck unless willing to work for free?

The biggest selling point to free operating systems is the lure of the free applications like office that go along with them. People are going to get use to the idea of free software, and expect not only their music to be free, but now all software as well. Who would use quickbooks when the generic open source quickbooks is just as good?

I think it will happen, and am glad I'm not a computer programmer. What do youall think?

I don't believe I have met anyone under the illusion that Open Source would create a world of free software.

...apart from one or two people in this thread who seem to be under that impression ;-)

Even if the software is free...

Like the senario in the movie AntiTrust

Tech support will still be an issue, and people will still pay for it.

What is the True Definition of Open Source...

From my under standing...
It is where the source code is open to the public to download etc... submit code to be added to the program... and learn from the source code to apply techniqes to your own program...

But that does not mean the software (the end product) is free...

It just means that it is open to the public to actively participate in the production of the end product...

Although *Most* of the open source projects now days (that I have seen) is free, such as Sonique audio player, Genesis 3D game engine and others...

If a company releases the source code with a license that states that the software is not free... and you agree to the license and participate in the project... then you are still bound to that license... and not paying for the end product would be piracy...

Please correct me if I am wrong
