Hi guys. I decided to run a Linux webserver. I do not have a lot of experience with Linux. could any expert tell me what version of Linux i need to download and where i can get it. I want the Linux server to be able to run php 5 and mysql and be secure. Thanks

Just about any current Linux release will work. Is this for commercial use, internal (intranet) ? Do you need a lot of tech support? Are you willing to pay? Do you have the time to invest in a lot of reading?

uff.. the same old question... you gonna get lots of different answers.

You can use any linux distro. My advice: could be Fedora, RedHat (you must buy it), Suse (paid as well as RH), Debian or Ubuntu.

Personaly, I use Ubuntu (debian based).

Cheers.

Could any one show me where i can download any of Fedora, RedHat , Suse , Debian or Ubuntu.I mainly look for free vesion at this moment since i am do not have much experience working and installing linux webserver. Do i need to install any webserver in the Linux version that u mentioned or it has the webserver build it. If the answer is yes what type of web server do i need to install. Thanks

i like suse cos i am a no0b at Linux and it was easy to setup Apache php and mysql. it even config itself so that it runs even if nobody is logged in :) . ...thx Suse i would give you a STAR!!! if i could

Binary Intelligence, true or false?

Unbuntu will even send you free CDs. Default setting sent me 10 of them. Didn't even charge me shipping.

I am new to linux and love the fact that Debian and Fedora both set up FTP/Apache servers right out the box - You can't be that...

Good luck.

I disagree with carloswill's implied suggestion that you install Apache from binary distribution.

My take on this has always been that you should install Apache and PHP from source tarball. Sometimes your distribution's maintainers can take a while to get a new version of a piece of software out, which can leave your machine running a vulnerable piece of software for a significant period of time. If you install from source, you can upgrade your software immediately.

Sleipnir, it's capulets like you who make blood in the market place. Eegads!! ;-) He was talking from a noobs perspective. Just get it running, play with it, break it, find out how to fix it then play with it somemore.
