Hi folks. I'm internationalising a VB program for Japan, which currently works OK in English. It uses SQL-server and Crystal 4.6.1.0 through ActiveX.

The problem is that Japanese strings from the database are not being printed in the reports - I just get blanks. To complicate things, third parties have written their own reports, which the program can connect to the user-selected database and then run, and I bet they won't work either!

I guess I need to upgrade my Crystal IDE but, the question is, to which version?

Version 9 developer: will it be compatible with those 3rd-party reports?
Version 8.5: will it work?
Japanese language pack: do I need one?
None of the above: should I be looking for a program bug instead?

I'll be glad for any help on this one...

CR 9 supports Unicode, there used to be a 30 day freebie which would have allowed you to test, but I think that they nuked it once CR 10 hit:

Here's some references:

There is a Japanese version of CR, which may not be of use to you, but if they're using it for their reports, you may have to allow for that, not sure what this entails though, sorry.

Thanks for the helpful URLS.

We're going with version 9 developer, and we'll buy both English & Japanese editions. I'll post again when we've tried it and found out how good our choice was!

Hi StarBeast,
I develop reports in Japanese in CR v8.5 English, unicode isn't supported in v8.5 but it is doable. I have a dedicated Japanese pc with IME, all regional settings are set according to how my users will be using their systems.

I'd recommend that you check all of your groups, sorts, suppressions, conditional section formatting, formulas, running totals special ordering and sql query "where" clause for text strings that should now be using Japanese characters/text.

Hope this helps.
Good luck,[deejay]
