What UNIX ?

Hi

I have Debian on my laptop (disk partition) for a while, but I used it mostly to write math and run some applications (Maple, Singular, Gap, MacCauley).

I am a teacher and I have received a grant to buy a UNIX box. I am really excited about it. I will have to administrate this UNIX machine (to run math programs and as UNIX server) since nobody else will do it. I am ready to learn and give a shot with this experimental machine.

What version of UNIX shall I install?

Any help for this complete novice would really come in handy.

From what I heard lunix is a way to go. You can have it for free.
