What to do if my Tech Support sucks? 9

Hi Gurus,

Last July I purchased two Mitel systems for my existing office and a new office I opened in San Diego. I'm happy with the system for the most part. I have two SX-200 controllers and my phones are all of the 5212/5224 variety.

I have a few issues I'm experiencing, though. Most notably being that I can't get tech support through the company who sold it to me short of threatening lives. I've learned some basics about the controller and figured out how to get into the console myself. I've been assigning desktops and renaming extensions, deleting MAC addresses, all to keep us afloat.

I have two users who travel often between the two offices. Rather than packing the phones with them each time they go instead there's phones for them at each location and when they arrive I've taught them to overwrite the extension on the other phone using ###ext. I've heard it called the cheap man's hotbox. This works great for us but it seems to be upsetting the phones. Several of my units are now stuck with the "WAITING FOR COMMS" screen. I read through this thread: but I'm about as make-shift an IT person as make-shift gets. The one time I was able to get the tech out here to do something about it he restarted the controller and it fixed all the phones. I was hoping someone could tell me what form I find that under before I go breaking something more than it already is or if someone could let me know how to fix this permanently it would be more than appreciated.

My second issue is with what I believe is called the "teleworker." When we were sold the system we were told we'd be able to take these phones anywhere there was an internet connection and it would operate like it was in our office. That hasn't quite been the case. I've worked with the tech a little when I was screaming because our CEO was leaving the country for three weeks and we got the one-way audio problem I read about in this thread:
We were trying to open up ports on my routers to get it working but never quite figured it out. Does anyone know exactly which ports I need to open or does it differ per installation? What we were trying was opening 6801-65535 to get the voice to go through. Either they weren't open correctly or the port range is somewhere else.

Anyway, if anyone could give me a hand it'd be appreciated. Furthermore if anyone could recommend somewhere I could get a service contract for my system in the San Diego area, please PM me w/ contact info.

Thanks.

The gateway is found in Form 47. Within that form, you will see a sub-menu with additional form choices. Form 1 is for System IP. Choose that and you will find the gateway IP that the 200ICP is programmed with. If it is not the Teleworker, you can try changing it, BUT be aware that you will need to reboot the system to make the change active, so only do it when you can take the system down for 5-10 minutes. Make sure you write down what the first gateway address is so that you can change it back if needed.

I just thought of something else. Is your Teleworker internal LAN IP within the same subnet as the IP on the phone system? If not, then there are other things to look for.

Ok, I'm looking at form 47, and the system IP Address is pointing at the internal IP of the SX-200. If I understand you correctly, it should be the external IP of the teleworker? I'll try changing it at lunch time and keep you posted. The teleworker is on the same subnet as the phone system, so I think that should be ok.

Thank you very much. Keeping my fingers crossed.

WAITING FOR COMM possible if people mix phone models when re-register. In fact it's not the best idea to move extensions this way. There are call forwarding features, hot desking, "follow me" and other stuff for mobile users. Speed dials to cell phones may help as well.

Regarding support. There are two options.
1. Find the right company to support you.
2. Take MITEL classes and do everything yourself.

The GATEWAY in form 47 should be pointed at the internal side of the TW server

In the TW server you add the local networks and the router address to route thru.

I hape you have not changed the System IP address as you state above or you are in for a world of hurt.

Not yet. I was thinking internal while the fingers typed external. Thanks, though. T-minus one hour.

Yes the internal / external thing is important too but please verify you are changing the GATEWAY address and not the SYSTEM IP address.

so I changed the gateway but can't figure out how to restart it apart from hard-booting it. Not sure I want to do that. I went into the Maintenance menu and option 1 for System but I'm not seeing a restart...

In maint there is an option for restart

That is if you're logged in as installer or Maint1

I'm logged in as Maint1 and have the following options:
1-System
3-Diagnostics
4-TO CDE
5-Traffic_Meas
6-Quit
7-Logs
8-ACD_Reports
9-Reports

under System I have:
1-Set
2-Show
3-Database
4-Monitor
5-Suspend_PRTR
6-Quit
7-Resume_PRTR
9-Stop

and under more keys:
1-Set_Firmware
2-Upgrade Boot
3-Ping

I guess its only under installer

Should be option 8 under system

Hard boot

I was able to restart the system using the installer account but after restarting and going back into form 47 it reverts the changes back. Is this because I'm not restarting in the same session that I change it in?

It's strange because I can log in as maint1, change the gateway IP, log out, log back in as maint1 to verify it's still changed, but when I log into installer and restart the system it changes back to what it was.

Any ideas?

The db does not operate the way you describe.

If it is changed, it is changed for all users.

Can't imagine a scenario where it will do as you describe.

Just curious, is the gateway IP address that you are entering within the same subnet as the IP address of the 200 ICP?

Log in with the INSTALLER account, do a backup, make the change and then do a system restart. Don't bother with MAINT1.

kwb: maybe it has something to do with the way I log into the console. I'm using puttytel and to switch accounts I actually have to close the session, as far as I know. Perhaps when I close the session before restarting the system it reverts the change?

paterson: Just saw the message and gave the prompts a quick lookover but didn't see the option to back up the system. I have to run so I'll look more in-depth in the morning but if you happen to see this message and feel generous enough to point me to the right place feel free to do so :)

Thanks again, guys.

To backup, go to the maintenance screens.

1-system
3-database
1-backup
Then you have options for either Kermit or FTP.

Kermit can only be used with a terminal emulation program like Procomm or Hyperterminal and this type of backup will only save the database.

FTP backup will backup the database plus VM. A medium FTP backup only does VM system and individual mailbox greetings. A full FTP backup will also save VM messages within the individual mailboxes.

Note - to do a FTP backup, you will need to have an active FTP server running. Then you define the IP address for that FTP server in form 47 - subform 1.

In your case, I would do a full FTP backup before making changes.

I got my teleworker working!
It was the issue with the gateway as you all stated. Once I set the gateway to the internal IP of the teleworker and restarted, I tested the teleworker and had two way audio for the first time.

However, the phones at our other site stopped working. They kept flashing Main Unavailable and resetting. Apparently they can't find this server any longer once I change the gateway. Does the gateway on our other site need to be pointed at the teleworker as well? It's currently pointed at that site's PBX (I believe that's the correct term).

That site is on a different subnet than this one, and paterson, I know you for one had raised different subnets as a possible issue. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

What are the phones at the other site normally connected to? A different controller or the same one you just changed the gateway on?

A different controller. We have one at each end. The one here is the "main" one as far as I know.
