What remote utility do you recommend under DSL?

I am aware that there are some programs such as PCanywhere, Laplink, TightVNC or even the native Windows program (Remote Desktop Connection or even Netmeeting) to remotely access a computer. However when I have done this is using a modem or a LAN connection. What could I do for the following scenarios?

I would like to be able to access my home computer from my office via DSL within the same city.

I would also like to access a computer abroad? Let’s say Brazil … Is it even possible to access this way a personal computer?

If this is possible, do you configure this by IP address? If so, how?
All the ip addresses in my LAN are type C. I guess I am supposed to use a public IP address, but how could I specify which one in the LAN?

Thanks.

You would need to decide which program you're going to use for remote access, then set up port forwarding in your router to support that program.

Then, you would connect to your EXTERNAL IP address, and it should forward to your INTERNAL LAN address.

Well, I can tell you how I access my PC from around the country with any internet connection. I have a static DNS from no-ip.com it is ********.servebeer.com (there are a few to choose from) and you just run a small client from your PC that pushes your IP out to the DNS server so no matter your IP address, you can always get to it from that static DNS address.

I run the free version of Real VNC and changed the ports to a non-standard one then use a 20 character password (letters numbers and punctuation) to allow access. I opened those ports on my firewall/router and made sure everything else I'm not using is closed. Pretty much thats about the easiest way of doing it.

You could do some VPN solution to make sure you are a little more secure but some places do funky things with VPN, so you might not always get in by using it. I am not quite as familiar with home solution VPN's so someone else might be able to offer some other solutions.

Cheers

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

Check out logmein.com. I use it to access my home computer from work, or any other computer with an internet connection.

I use real vnc to get to my work computer from home. Logmein is much better.

We use Dameware and/or Remote Desktop (Windows).

Good luck,
