Can anyone tell me how to determine which version of the Oracle8i client I have installed, as when I try to instal the ODBC driver from the CD it says that it cannot be installed on a 7.x or 8.0.x client?

Run the Oracle Installer and click 'Installed Products'

Do you have more that one Oracle home?

Hi,
Then you probably have both 8.0( or , gasp, earlier) and 8i ( 8.1.x) - When installing the ODBC stuff, be sure to specify the 8i one..
( Trial and Error will work, since, as you have noticed, it will not install into the incorrect one)
