what number of port? 1

1. i am trying to develop a chat program and i am straining my mind to figure out exactly what a number of port is? Could i use any number of port to connect two or more computers?

2. what about UDP/TCP? what i should use to develop such program?

Choose one that is free.

As for a choice between TCP or UDP; That's up to you if you want to achieve stateful or stateless connections.
If that and the concept of ports confuses you, then I strongly suggest you get a book and study TCP/IP thoroughly first before you start your project.
