I have an NT4.0 workstation that occasionaly gives an error of "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: SMNT40".

I have used multiple search engines and still not found anything usefull on this problem. I am anxious for any help.

SMNT40 refers to a Sound Max audio driver. If it is failing to start, either the audio hardware is malfunctioning or SMNT40 is the incorrect driver for your hardware (my guess).

Go to control panel > devices > scroll to SMNT40 and disable it.

As far as getting the correct drivers just do the usual... check hardware docs, physically look for any sound chips w/identifiers... windrivers.com is a pretty good resource too.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the help. At least I know where this is coming from now.
