Hello again,
I'm helping to displace an end-of-life server 2000 domain controller with a Server 2003 system. I'll need to migrate user accounts and data (spreadsheets, word docs etc) it's a fairly simple setup compared to most. I think I understand the concepts involved but could use some help.
Can someone provide a high level overview of this process?
1) Add the server 2003 system and promote to DC. This includes installing AD, DNS, DHCP.
2) Demote the old system and ultimately take offline.
It's the in between that's a little fuzzy.

If you don't already have a 2003 DC on your network you will need to use the adprep command to update the schema so it is ready for 2003 DCs, if the server you are putting in is 2003 r2 adprep must be run from the 2nd cd.

Steps to extend the schema

Yes promote server to a DC and install DNS and DHCP on that box

How to transfer DHCP database;

If DNS is AD integrated then when you install DNS on the new DC this will be replicated to your new box.

Transfer the fsmo roles to the new dc;

Ensure DHCP hands out the new server IP as the DNS server address to your clients.

Then demote old DC. You might want to wait a few days after doing all the above before demoting the old DC.

Do you plan on only having 1 DC?, you should really have 2 for fault tolerance

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?
