What is the meaning of this system message: DCH 4 MAINT...

This is about a system message
Our Meridian 1/opt.51C/Rlse 23 comes frequently with the following message on the console(tty0):

DCH: 4 MAINT INDICATION TIME: HH:MM:SS
COUNTER VALUE
15 255
16 255
[/red]

I guess that it has to do with our ISDN/PRI circuit, since it is the only one with a D-channel.

Anybody knows what it means, should I request my vendor to fix something? It has been like this for a long time. The switch's services are just fine, but I don't fill confortable without knowing what is going on.

Hi,

These are error counts for specific items on the D's.

D-channel 4, Counter 15, 255 instances. counter 16, 255 instannces where.

15 = messages missing mandatory information.
16 = messages with undefined information.

Goto LD 96 enter.

PLOG DCH xxx

where xxx is your D-channel, This will clear the counters, If you then keep a watch on the switch or have a capture file runniing you can see how often this is occuring and on what circuit it is associated with.

Now that I learned that LD 96 deals with D-channel, I started playing with things like:
Enabling monitoring of incoming messages: ENL MSGI 04 MSG ALL, or
Enabling monitoring of outgoing messages: ENL MSGO 04 MSG ALL, and
then I DISabled them with DIS [MSGI/MSGO] 04 MSG ALL.

I played with different levels of output format, for instance: SET MSGI 04 MON 2.

I also used the PLOG DCH 04 to trint Protocol error and to reset the counter of the log.

For a while I just enabled ENL MSGI 04 MSG ALER to monitor SYSTEM's alerts[/red].
I was very suprised with the high frequency of ALERTING[/red]. For me ALERT[/red] is something that needs some kind of intervention or correction in order to avoid or correct something. The point now is what action I need to take with some many alert warnings? Should I print them out and forward to my maintenance/vendor for analysis? Is the Meridian 1/51C deteriorating or the T-1 tie line with the Central Office presenting problems?
Any further advice?

Hi EB,

I would suggest getting your Telco to run a non intrusive test on this circuit given the nature of the errors that you are seeing. Seems like they may have turned down some features on your T1 while the nortel is looking for it.

If they cannot see anything speak to your vendor regarding they type if error message that you are seeing.

OK Jason![/blue], I took your advise by reporting the situation to our vendor for a remote login and expert analysis. The engineer that called me before logging in the switch consider unusual for ALERT[/red] messages comming so often.
If I learn anything meanifull after further analysis I will post it over here.
