What is the latest version of Paradox 2

Hi,

I've just got a call out of the blue to design a case management database. My most recent version is Paradox 9 but wondered if anyone can reccomend anything higher and does it still come with the developer's runtime software.

Indications of pricing and where to purchase would be much appreciated please. I live the UK.

Hard to tell. Corel has just recently released the newest version of Corel Office Pro, the only way Paradox is sold now. They will not release it separately.

There is no separate information on the web site about Paradox, so it may still be the same version that came with 10 or ll. I doubt that much has changed at all since 10. I could be wrong, but I think 9 was the last version that could be perchased separately.

It is pretty apparent that Paradox is only included because they happen to have it. The advertising stresses above all that Word Perfect can now produce and edit pdf format.

I keep expecting it to either disappear or be sold off to filemaker, Oracle, M.soft. You might take a long look at one of the other options before settling on Paradox.

Many thanks, that is much appreciated. If memory serves Filemaker wasn't even a relational database offering so I hope Paradox isn't sold to them. Oracle I could understand as much of Paradox is similar to Oracle Forms and Reports that were available with Oracle 8i and to this day Paradox still links quite impressivly to Oracle tables and runs SQL in quite an exemplary manner.

I only use Paradox because you can knock out applications for users at dirt cheap prices without tying them into convoluted and expensive concurrent user licensing arrangements. That and my belief that Microsoft Access has actually deskilled database designers.

Paradox Version 9 is still fine, am only noticing very minor issues with XP Pro. I think I'll buy the Word Perfect suite and see if it is worth my while.

I've used Paradox for simpler applications for about five years now. If I stick to basic child-parent table relations, lookups, basic forms and reports etc. it still works fine for me in Windows XP Professional networked environment.

I do occasionally have users reporting "General Protection Violations" or other odd errors. On the occasions when this occurs, I recommend that they shut down Paradox and restart.

I also do not think much has been done with it since Version 9. My organization is running Version 11 and I haven't noticed any changes at all... other than that it doesn't appear as though Paradox is being enhanced to keep up with the changing Windows environment.

This concerns me, because when new computers go to Vista, will Paradox still work? The only way to tell is to try it!

Thank you for this advice, it is much appreciated. I am in the UK and cannot even find anywhere to buy Paradox or WordPerfect Office Professional. These are desperate times.

Corel are a little bone headed about Paradox. They seem to be putting all their eggs in the graphics basket.
You cannot buy Paradox as a stand alone program. You must buy the Corel Office Suite (at one point Corel was not going to "Sell" Paradox at all but sort of lease it out by the year..apparently that didn't work at all.)

I purchased P.11, which runs about the same . I notice absolutely no difference between this and P10, which came with Corel 10 (2000), 11 (2003). I understand ten was better than 9, but 11 is nothing.

I'd suggest trying to get a copy of Corel Office 10 Pro or a similar program. Paradox in 10 distinguishes itself, I seem to remember, by offering runtime free. Correct me, please, if I am wrong.

As I have posted elsewhere, we have found one difference. There may be more. Paradox includes a file which causes the working directory to revert to My Documents on reboot. This ..pdxregcl.exe and pdxregcl.ini, if I am not mistaken..can simply be deleted to resolve the issue.

I have 64 bit XP, and it functions well. I find that 10, which is to some extent different from nine, is more stable than previous versions. Some issues I experienced such as the inability to change indexed tables do not seem to be an issue. This could also, however, be due to more disk space and memory.

A note on file maker: From what I have gleaned in researching it, Filemaker is the easier/est relational database to use. I would prefer, if I could change, to go over to access, but with something like 10,000 documents safely catalogued in MB files and no way to transfer, I am with Paradox forever.

It seems that the single user and small network data management function of computing is more or less the step child, with research and clever minds going over to SAP, Oracle and web based applications. It would be nice to know that this is not true and we can expect better and more transparent data management solutions for our needs.

Thank you the guidance you have given. Please don't despair at Paradox as it probably gives the best inexpensive proper relational database for anyone following 3NF rules. Using Paradox forms and reports is not markedly different from Oracle forms and reports. If anything Paradox is slightly more flexible. Paradox also allows you run standard SQL files which is quite an advantage if you ever want a blend between Paradox and Oracle or MySQL

I still can't find anywhere in the UK to buy Paradox 10 or 11 so might have to order from the US.

Thanks for the link. I know it sounds paradoxical (pardon the pun) but there is no way to buy Corel Professional from the UK supplier and you can't order from the US as UK isn't in the drop down menu. Back to the good old telephone.

May I add another quirk in Paradox 11 that I noticed since upgrading to the WordPerfect X3 suite.

While working in a report, if I copy a summary field and try to edit the formula to summarize a different field, I get a general protection error that shuts down the program.

However, I think that I have finally found a solution. When the field is copied, it seems to duplicate the complete source table in the data model as well. Deleting the copy or copies of the source table before editing the summary calculation in the copied field seems to stop this disconcerting GP fault. I did not notice anything like this in version 10.

No one had heard of this. One user attempted to duplicate the issue, but didn't have the problem you reported.

Maybe with more details (in a different (new) thread?), we can work out what is going on.
