I think my hdd might be dead. When it's plugged in, the computer freezes up when going through the detecting hdd stage of bootup. I've tested the Motherboard with another hdd and it works ok. So I was just wondering (it's a long shot) if the extra connector on the back of the hdd (seagate sata 250gb) has anything to do with hdd recovery or am i way off track. I looked all over the seagate website and could not find anything about this extra connector. Just above the connector it says "+Tyco" if that means anything :) Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Can you provide model specifics?

In addition to the SATA type power connector, some SATA drives also have a molex type power connector, like the IDE drives use. Maybe that's what you're looking at?

the model of the hdd is: ST3250823AS / Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250 Gbytes. The extra connector looks similar to the jumper pins on an ide drive, master/slave type, though it only has one row of 4-pins. It's located right next to the SATA connector on the back of the drive. Just thought I'd let you know as well that last night in my frustration I tried something a bit unusual with this hdd. I put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes and then plugged it in. It actually detected the drive!!...strange. It got all the way to the black loading screen with the Windows XP logo on it and then started to make a knocking noise. It looked like it might load and then just froze up.

crashbandicoot, Quote from Seagate website:

Serial ATA drives are designed for easy installation with no jumpers, terminators, or other settings. It is not necessary to set any jumpers on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the signal connector is for factory use only.

Thanks to everyone for your help. It looks like I'll have to RMA this drive, thanks.
