what is the difference between merlin messaging 617A49 and 617C49

I am just wondering as I acquired a 617C49 in a bundle of modules while purchasing a backup power supply for our system.

Would I be able to swap in the 617C49 if our 617A49 failed?

I think the "A" is a max of 6 ports and the "C" can go up to 12 ports of voicemail.

Interesting, the boards look identical both have 8 lights in the ports area.
any idea if I were to swap these would I need to do a renumber? or just a restore of the merlin messaging backup?

The C49 is Merlin Mail R2.5 the A49 is a Merlin Mail R1
you can swap out but you will have to reprogram your attendant & mailboxes, no restore of backup ,and your cover group if the license port card is different , the port card will work in either

The 617C49 arrived and I see it uses the upper lights for the extra ports.

R2.5 also started showing messages in your display (New Msg 1). R1 does not do that.

The R2.5 (617C49) can be upgraded to R4. The 617A49 can only be R1 and a max of 6 ports. If you compare the boards you'll see the 617C49 has extra chips that allows up to 12 ports.
