We are about to implement Vmware on our network
And I am not sure what product (ESX or GSX) to purchase?
In the test period we been using the ESX server on a single server connected to our SAN
In the working environment we will be using 4 servers in some sort of cluster.
Which Vmware product will achieve that gold and why.

Thanks

in short: ESX

ESX is oriented to production environment, GSX for development (mainly).

GSX requires an operative system to run (either windows or linux). ESX is installed directly on the hardware because it *has* its own OS (based on redhat 7.3), which is tuned for VMWare kernel. This feature improves the performance of the virtual machines.

If you want to make some sort of cluster, you need ESX, because ESX has VMFS-2 (vmware filesystem), and it supports concurrent access between ESX servers, allowing share the storage in SAN environment.

Read the documentation regarding ESX, VMFS and SAN environment.

Cheers.

Hey Chacalinc,

If you don't mind I would like to get your email so that we can discuss VMware a bit. I am looking to implement this on our network and would like a pro's feedback on the software. If possible, please give me your email so that I can drop you a line.

Thanks,
Eddie
