Personally I like Arcserve, mainly because it does what I need it to do. My company was already using an older version of Arcserve when I started and due to budget limitations I upgraded for far less than a new software pakage. I do have a number of friends in the Networking field who use NW 5 and lots of them say Veritas is now the way to go for backups. From what I hear I think Veritas is definately worth looking into.
I use Veritas's BE on a number of sites and I have had nothing but great results from it. I agree it is a little gawdy trying to help someone restore files over the phone. But if you walk them through it on site and let them do it, they will actually pick it up(at least my clients did).
I've used both, and prefer Arcserve because the sequence of the screens and menus makes more sense to me than BackupExec, which, to me, is counter-intuitive. But, some people find it matches their mental processes! I like being able to do a restore from the server console in Arcserve, where in BackupExec it has to be done from the GUI.
Not absolutly true Fred. Backupexec has a client that runs on the console and you can restore files from there. I don't even use the console unless I setup my client to schedule jobs and show them how to run restores from their workstation.
Hi, Sina,
If I could avoid Arcserve I would. It always locks up my Win95 PC when I use it to try and recover files. It is also very difficult to understand what tape it is looking for if you want to restore something. It seems to use wierd numbers that don't seem logical. For a commercially released programme it is a bag of worms.
My personal experiences have always led me away from ArcServe and in the direction of BackupExec. Ever since CA took over the product from Cheyenne, things have just never seemed quite right. I've not had any problems walking people thru console led restores using the nwclient on a netware console. Hope this helps.
