What is SPATIAL option in oracle?

I wonder what is the spatial option in oracle? what does it do?

the documentation i found just says is used for web development etc. the explanation is very generic...

used more for mapping applications like multimap.com (don't know if it uses Oracle - but you get what I mean)

You can relate your customers to a map - great for web apps
