After copying .avi files to a backup DVD with Roxio Drag-to-disk , Roxio presents a choice of closing the DVD so that it can be read on any PC without Roxio, or leaving it so that Roxio is required to read the DVD.

(1) Which is the safer choice to assure this backup DVD would be useable should it be necessary to restore the files, and not have problems trying to read it [because of any base Windows incompatability with reading Roxio-copied files]? (The DVD is full so nothing more will be added to it.)

(2) Would the answer be different if these were different types of files (e.g. audio or data files)?

Thank you.

If you close it, you won't be able to add any more to the DVD, which obviously isn't a problem since you stated it's full. By closing it, your data is safe and you will be able to access it anywhere, with or without Roxio.

If you don't close it, you won't be able to open it anywhere without Roxio, though it will still be safe (as long as Roxio is present).

I would recommend closing the disc. What if you back it all up on disc and then something happens to Roxio? Or you end up with a new machine that doesn't have Roxio and you don't want to go through with the trouble of messing with it? Burn it and close it, otherwise you may be left in the dark later...

Oh, and I'd recommend using CDBurnerXP instead. It can do the fancy stuff, is free, and can resume sessions for future burning without leaving the CD/DVD unreadable by any other machine. Good times.

Thank you archwayguy (and a star) for both of your recommendations. I will look into CDBurnerXP for future backups.
