What is 'OfficeSuite'?

I have received an email suggesting I download 'The New Microsoft Office 2011 Altervative' from the attached URL.

This turns out to be a thing called 'OfficeSuite' and it is compatible with Office 2007 which I use. It includes 'Writer', 'Impress', 'Calc', and other sub-packages about which I know nothing and can find nothing.

What is this beast, and should I pay any attention to it?

Seems to be open-office which is a fre ereplacement for MS office.

I wouldn't trust such URLs.
There are some pretty nasty fraud sites out there offering to download free software but having hidden clauses for relatively high fees.
OpenOffice - or as it is now called "LibreOffice" is a very good OpenSource alternative to MS Office. As OpenSource it is freeware and without doubt feel free to go ahead and get it - but I strongly suggest getting it from a respectable and trustworthy download site like MajorGeeks, Sourceforge - or via the LibreOffice site itself:
