What is /etc/rc for?

I have one server the has an etc/rc file. It refers to mulit-user initialzation. Can anyone explain more about this? Thanks.
 
Pls check the inittab where init is set for multiuser mode.
Example. init 3 or 2 ..change this to what you need. but by default this must be 3 as NFS runs from this level.

I too would like to know what the /etc/rc file is for. I was under the impression it was a start up file. Thats where I put my samba mbd entries at to start up. I am wrong? James Collins

rc is a the system startup script. it stands for "run command".
