The words in the following list all have an interesting property. Can anyone tell me what it is?

triennially, chainlet, grounded, schooled, baignet, board, allele, also, ours

There are loads of other examples out there. So for extra marks, why not suggest some?

HAUNT?

Having trouble finding a big word, but small ones aren't too hard to find. The work seems to require a healthy dose of vowels. And I think my dyslexia is a bit of an aid on this one.

Dyslexics of the world UNTIE!

mscallisto,

>> I thought that "Kuchen" is cake but I can't figure out what "Fasnet-Kuechle" translates to (if anything)?

"Kuchen" is a cake...
"Fasnet" (dialectal form of "Fastnacht") translates to "Shrovetide" (UK), "Shrove-Tuesday", "Mardy Gras", or "Carneval"...
"Kuechle" (also dialectal) is a diminutive of "Kuchen"...

N1GHTEYES,

thank you for the clear up... ;)

and I am still stumped... guess this week is my "dunce" week...

Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

BBB: look again at mscallisto's last post, and mine immediately after it. If you're stumped and want to give in, look at guitarzan's spoilers.

Bonus points go to Sam Bones!

They are all alternades.

An extra bonus point to CC for knowing what they are called.

BTW CC - did you know already? Or did you somehow find that? If so, how?

Tony

==> did you know already?
I knew the word alternade and the criteria necessary for a word to be an alternade; however, I did not recognize your list of words as alternades until after having read the thread.

Star for guitarzan. I doubt I would have had the same insight, even if given much longer to think about the problem.

karluk: I say the same thing about all the math-related puzzles in STC :) though, I do love trying! A rare success for me. Credit some Cryptic Crosswords I've done in the past (though I'm so slow at solving them, I never complete them)

Funny, it's taking me longer to think of my own "alternade" (thanks to CC for naming the term) than it took to solve the puzzle. But, I do want that extra Spinal Tap "these points go to eleven" point N1GHTEYES promised. But I see others have given their own alternades, and i do not want to parrot their results. Wait a minute........

And I can't believe that even after solving it, I did not immediately figure out the hint... Now you know why I never finish a Cryptic Crossword [banghead]

If you need practice, the Guardian cryptic (plus their others too) is available online every day here:

For an easy intro, try the one on Mondays - it is usually a bit gentler. Failing that, there's always the quiptic (also available from that page).

Tony

Here is an example of why Monday's are a better bet. This one is from today. It is by Araucaria. As one might expect from the Rev, you wouldn't call it easy.

Clue: Copper in French bed, put back into back, is netted (9)

I eventually got it from the crossers. I could then parse it. I should have been able to get it from the clue (it is a perfectly fine cryptic clue) but that was beyond me today.

Hint (these are the crossers I had):
_ _ t _ c _ l _ r

I'll put the answer up later if nobody gets it.

Spot on CC!
Was that with or without the hint?
Care to parse it?

Tony

With the hint

CC - even so, unless you read my post immediately I think you got there faster than I did.

Here is how I parse it if anyone is interested:
(Copper | in ( French bed, | put back )) into | back, | is | netted
cu | lit => til | rear = netted

So:

cu
in
lit=> ti l
into
re ar
= having the form of a net; netlike.

=> reticular

Fairly standard for old reverend monkey puzzle.
