It seems Red Hat used to prompt the installer to make an emergency boot disk, but with Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS v3, I did not get that prompt. So, how do I make an emergency boot disk? Is there a GUI to do so or a command? Thank you.

Thank you. I am trying to learn Linux. If the emergency boot disk was so vital at one point and has vanished, what has taken its place . . . a CD (and if so, Install Disk 1 or a special CD that I would make)? Please fill me in. Thanks again.

Did you search for the terms I mentioned?
I guess the script to create a bootdisk is still there, but not called during installation.

I'm using linux for years and never needed those bootdisks.
With knoppix, I may boot from cd in case of emergency, and fix things from there.

PS.: I have a debian-based-knoppix-system with mkboot, which is a debian-script, and therefore probably NOT on your system.

Any RedHatter here?

Using Knoppix as an emergency boot disk is an excellent idea! Thanks again. I am planning to learn Linux pretty well asap and try to get my RHCE this summer. The book I have (based on 8.0) stresses emergency recovery (although I have never really had a need for an emergency boot disk myself). I appreciate your time and help!

I don't have EL, but the command under all other RH distros before Enterprise was/is 'mkbootdisk'.

foxtrot(~)$ apropos bootdisk
mkbootdisk (8) - creates a stand-alone boot floppy for the running system

I don't see a need for a boot disk. If something goes horribly wrong, you can fix everything by booting off of CD1 and entering rescue mode.

You mentioned taking the RHCE earlier, so you should be very familiar with this process before taking the exam because you will need to know how to work in the rescue environment and all the troubleshooting steps involved to fix a broken machine.

Thanks for the heads up. I am in a self-imposed crash course.
