@Chrishunt, Accepting that definition, would a Idiotion Blog be the opposite? A collection of the worst Ideas? [jester2]

A world wide web logbook for idea generation.

They'll soon shorten this to Ilog, perhaps, or rather iLog, the next big thing from Apple.

Hmm. Aviation then is about video file generation, isn't it?

Bye, Olaf.

Ideation is a term used in suicide prevention. Its context is in teaching caregivers to look for ideation among their charges.
Ideation is the ability to form ideas or to accept ideas and develop an action. Caregivers are taught to look for signs that their charges are developing ideas they could take to the development and action stages. Some signs of suicide ideation are written notes and diaries, verbalalizing thoughts of suicide, and being preoccupied with death and how it can occur.

An ideation blog could be a blog where caregivers share their experiences and provide tips on suicide prevention.

Well,

I also found suicidal ideation, but that's a sepcific form of ideation. I think nobody here would poke fun at such a topic, the criticism rather is about the tendency to abbreviations.

It's not unusual words are defined by shortening something. Blog is an abbreviation itself. We get used to abbreviations, but new ones sound unfamiliar or even awkward, like ideation.

You might be right, the ideation blog is about suicidal ideation and suicide preventions, if diaries or blogs are mechanisms used for bringing people back to more positive thoughts. Nevertheless ideation is a word, which will need some time to get used to, if you'd ask me.

Bye, Olaf.

Especially by Americans. :)

i.e. 'prolly' rather than probably

>prolly

Good example, but the tendency is not just that kind of laziness by spelling words as spoken, but also in the normal etymology of words. Automobile is shortened to Auto, omnibus became bus, to stay on the vehicle topic. There are many such cases of words surely very accepted by everyone which came from abbreviating something.

I actually would like ideation as the word itself, if it wouldn't just be idea generation - as if an idea would be the product of a factory. Perhaps the think tank? There are better words for idea generation, aren't there? Creativity, brainstorming... Depends on the topic and case, perhaps, but there surely are very many and good words.

It's acceptable, that sciences have their own language and specialist terms to separate something from the colloquial language, but if that breaks that barrier and appears in such public and common places like blogs, the term loses it's differentiation. It may have it's reason from the therapy form, but then that's something you can't really prevent from happening. Maybe also a way to get some awareness.

Bye, Olaf.
