For a recent client and for ourselves, I've found moving J169 phones to H323 avoids a bit of a headache with all the SIP hoops to jump through and more importantly keeps the J169 phone identical from a functionality standpoint to existing 9608/9611 phones. Any downside to this?

Boot a phone up out of the box, hit admin, enter 27238 password, scroll all the way down to signaling and change to H323, reboot and you're J169 just became a 9611. Just make sure you have J series firmware uploaded to the SD card Primary folder.

The user experience of the display - things like the background and screen saver that each user can select (if you allow them to)

The ability to use the Wireless card on the J179 (SIP mode only)

I switch J169's to H323 when deploying as VPN phones (VPN not available in SIP mode)

* given to J as I did not realise this as possible,
will now need to investigate all the implications - screen saver should not be an issue any sensible company would insist on their own corporate logo if using a custome screen saver. & I guess the Wifi card issue can be treated as a special case when in use just like VPN would need to be if using sip.

As always it seems to be a simple case of use the apropriate tool for the apropriate job, one size does NOT fit all.

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

This isn't supported in R11 just as a heads up.

Yes that is correct. Running the J1XX series is for pre R11 systems. It's right in the phone admin guide and offer document that its not supported. From the offer document "5 Requires Deskphone H.323 6.7 or later software. H.323 not supported on IP Office 11.0 or later." Just be aware of that little tidbit. I personally have not tried it. But its good if it works in a pinch for someone who doesn't want or have the budget for a SBC.
