What happens to mailbox if I change a user domain name?

I'm being forced to shorten a user's domain name due to a third party software that uses the domain name and password for login. The current username is over 8 characters long. I can copy the user, but how do I associate the new user with the mailbox?

Rename the user in user manager for domains then change the primary windows account for the mailbox.
