Hi
I've rh 7.1 installed, and before when I logged in as root and started a terminal window it would say:
root@localhost root#, but once when I rebooted the machine it looked like it was updating or something when gnome started (got msgs like 'welcome to gnome 1.2') and now when I am logged in as root and start a terminal window it just says:
bash 2.04#

I've been playing with user setups in linux.conf because I want to know why I can't open some (non-critical) apps as myself (kjell@localhost kjell), but I am pretty sure that I didn't change any settings for root.
An example of what's happening is that I can pla Maelstrom as root, but not when I am logged in as kjell.

Just so it's mentioned, I am still playing around with linux to learn to use it, and as an reinstall only takes me an hour I am not so concerned about what I am doing :)

Don't bother. After much searching I found the info I needed. My real problem was that everywhere I looked I could find how to add users, but I couldn't find info on actually setting up a user with the rights I would like a particular user to have. I haven't actually solved the 'problem' yet, but Linux RedHat 7.1 Bible (idg books) actually has a lot on this issue, info I just didnt find elsewhere. I just haven't had the time yet to read the relevant chapters yet.
So my question should have been: How do I actually manage users in linux.

Kjell :)

Hi,

Not exactly sure what you mean by 'manage' users. The easy way to do user admin is via linuxconf (/sbin/linuxconf as root). See --> and the stuff after that - especially groups --> . See also --> .

On your original query - as you no doubt found that relates to the setting of the PS1 environment variable --> .

Regards
