Hi,
I would like to learn a graphics tool to make picture look more professional, so I can use them on my commercial website.
I am hesitating between Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. I don't have time to learn both. I need something quick but good.

Thanks!

If you're looking to become a graphics professional, it has to be Photoshop. Whatever the merits of the products on the market, PS is the industry standard and you have to know it to get work in that area.

If you're just looking to pretty up some pictures for use on a website, PSP will do just fine. So would Photoshop Elements or any number of other products. I think "quick but good" is a good description of PSP, but as a poster on this forum I'm biased.

Chris,

I use PSP quite a bit and am happy with it but I'm curious tho, why do you prefer Photoshop over PSP?

I don't. I have PSP too, and think Photoshop is overpriced for what you get. I've never found anything that I wanted to do that I couldn't do with PSP but could do with PS. However, I've not used PS very much, so it may have merits that aren't apparent to me.

However, I stand by my original statement:

If you're looking to become a graphics professional, it has to be Photoshop.

I'm using "professional" in a literal sense here - producing graphics as a job, not a hobby. If you're looking to get work in this area, you have to have Photoshop on your CV. Granted, this may make no sense if you compare its capabilities and its price tag with those of its competitors, but sense does not always come into play in these matters. Sometimes its just better marketing or historical coincidence.

I am a graphics professional. I make my living working for a publishing company. I have a BSIT and MIS degree. I earn well into the 6 figure range.

I have Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. I am an expert on both. I use Paint Shop Pro more often than Photoshop, unless I'm doing print work. When it comes to print work Paint Shop Pro can not compete, well not yet anyway... it is getting better, but still not serious competition.

If you have the Anniversary Edition of PSP 7, goto Help > Tutorials and you will find 10 of my tutorials :)

PSP Forever!

For what you want to do, that is, correcting photos for a website, Paint Shop Pro is just perfect. The basic photo correction tools and filters are pretty much the same on both programs, however, since Paint Shop Pro has a more user-friendly interface, it is easier to learn than Photoshop, or at least it seems to be with what you are trying to do.

I'm not saying that Photoshop isn't good, because it sure is, but for your needs it would be quite a waste of money. To do this kind of work you would use like 10-15% of the program.
