I know this is probably as bad as which is better, asp or php.

But having been a windows user about 99.9% of the time (some Novell server experience).

I am wanting to set up a desktop with Linux to poke around and gain some knowledge - on my terms.

Which version?

Redhat or Mandrake?

And any interfaces that are also recommended would be nice.

Thank you in advance. "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

At this point, it's six of one/half-dozen of the other.

Mandrake leans more toward support for the KDE GUI, and has always had a reputation for easy installs.

RedHat has always leaned more toward Gnome and has a larger install base.

From a standpoint of learning how to administer the system, either will do. Both are certified as complying with the Linux Standard Base, so administering one or the other is about the same.

I will mildly recommend RedHat over Mandrake, but only because it's what I've always used. As far as which widget set to use, my personal preference is KDE, but that's the equivalent of saying that I prefer vanilla ice cream to chocolate. ______________________________________________________________________
