I just re-installed my legal copy of Office 97 on my new machine and received this message when I tried to start Access-- "Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine." This happens when I click on the msaccess.exe file and a .mdb file. The install went through w/o any problems (once I turned Norton off).

Now perhaps I should mention I had recently installed Office 2000 -legal copy--. I thought that might be the problem so I uninstalled Office 2000, uninstalled Office 97 and re-booted and then re-installed Office 97 and I still get the message.

Does anybody have any ideas??

Thanks!

I found the answer on Microsoft's web page--I had to download a file that rebuilds your license--works fine now!

Microsoft will not allow you to step down from an Office 2000 to 97
Do a search for "No Access Key" at the microsoft site and you'll find the solution. I did
I thought I bookmarked the site but did not, sry. "The reward of one duty done is the power to fulfill another"

It may be worth mentioning here that Microsoft Licensing procedure is changing to a single licence intallation per machine! Reinstalling MS software will become more problematic than usual! A Cheering thought
Apart from that JRClown's reponce is valid MS does not allow users to downgrade their softwrae installtion

Cheers

I don't know if you read my reply above, but MS has a file you can download to fix the license--it worked for me, so I did downgrade with only that little hitch.

Thanks for your input.
