The backup gives the error unable to open the item \\EADP2\D:\VirtualMachine\564d7ab9-01d1-06f3-1372-021d0b0b092c.vmem - skipped. It seems to back up the rest of the files that are part of the virtual machine.

Does anyone know what this file is and if I need to back it up? And if so how to back it up?

Thank you very much for that information. That told me how to get the file to stop showing up as skipped and says they can't find anything that says these files are important. Does anyone know if I do need to back up this file because God knows I don't want to not backup something we are gonna need for a restore later.

<uuid>.vmem
The virtual machine's paging file, which backs up the guest main memory on the host file system. This file exists only when the virtual machine is running, or if the virtual machine has crashed.

<snapshot_name_and_number>.vmem
Each snapshot of a virtual machine that is powered on has an associated .vmem file, which contains the guest's main memory, saved as part of the snapshot.

If you disable vmem files you will not have to worry about backing them up.

Sorry to butt in to this thread but it struck me as curious because i always shut the vm's down and back them up, so i thought hell if i can back them up while they are up and running that would be great. So... i tried coping the vm files minus the .vmem .vmem.lck and .lck files off to run a test. The files copied off fine but blue screen when i boot it. Have you ever tested this method fredlin1234? Wondering if i missed something or you may be making backups of junk you cant restore. Or is it the process that makes this method work? Disable the creation of .vmem files and you are ok to backup vm's in this fashion? What about performance, any noticeable improvement or degradation by disabling .vmem?
