What does the Mailbox Management Process Do?

Under server, name of server properties, there is a Mailbox Management tab, what does the actual setting do?

Is it more or less to turn on a recipient policy that has been created?

I believe it is for Recipient policies. That is what we use it for. we set time limits on users mailboxes anything older than X days gets deleted. and we have it set up to run every sunday night.
