What does "^" Do in a Formula?

Good morning. I have downloaded a fancy workbook and it contains the following formula:-

=SQRT((C2-$C$9)^2+(D2-$D$9)^2)

and I've never seen the 'hat' used before.

Enlighten me please!!

The ^ is raised to the # power.
2^2 = 4
2^3 = 8
8^3 = 512

I think the expression might be the Pythagorean Theorem.
