Hi. Just a general question I'd like to open up. Looking for an inexpensive solution for monitor cleaning. I've heard everything from alcohol to windex. What is the best for cleaning smudges from standard monitors and laptops without damaging the screen or leaving streaks?

On tube type monitors I have used Windex for years. Spray a little on so it doesn't run down into the surrounding cover. On laptops I would spray it on the paper towel and not the screen. On LCD monitors I haven't a clue. I wouldn't spray them directly. I don't see why you couldn't spray Windex on the paper towel and wipe them off. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." For standard monitors, it's just like cleaning your TV screen. Windex works fine, although Endust Electronics Anti-Static Spray works better if you can get your hands on a can. I've had a hard time finding the stuff recently. Be sure not to confuse it with the type for wood surfaces! It's the blue can not the yellow one!

For LCD screens, just go to your local CompUSA, BestBuy, or Radioshack. They sell solutions "clinically tested" for LCD screens! As far as I know, Windex shouldn't hurt the screen either though I can't say I've tried!

Windex.

In a pinch once I used 409, and it worked, though it still left some streaks and smudges which were later removed with windex.

When cleaning an LCD it's best to use a damp cloth. Alcohol and ammonia can both damage LCD screens, so a damp cloth is your best (and cheapest!) bet since many glass cleaners contain ammonia. Corey Palmer
