Hi guys, I have just a little question.

I have a S8300 Avaya Server and I have licences to add SIP trunks, but I don't have a SIP server. To reduce long distance tolls my boss want to order SIP trunks with a VoIP vendor. My Avaya distributor told me that I need a SBC (Session border controller), but I'm not sure if the SBC is provided for the VoIP carrier or if I need to adquire it by my side, I mean, I want to know if in this scenario I just need the SIP licences or if I need something else.

Please advice :)

The SBC is independent of the carrier. You need to aquire that and license it according to how many SIP sessions your plan to buy from the carrier.

Thank you wpetilli
A VoIP provider told me that they have the SBC, so my question is: If a VoIP carrier has a SBC, I just need to have the SIP licences?, and, If the Vendor doesn't have a SBC, I should get one?

I don't have expirience with SIP services, that is the reason of my questions :)
Regards

what cm revision and platform are you on , you would potentially require session manager or ses on r 5 but a local sbc is certainly recommended as cm aonly transmits tcp & tls packets , even tough your sip carrier has an sbc many do , you will require one for security unless you want toll fraud to occcur

The carrier's SBC is there to protect the carrier. You should have an SBC of your own to protect yourself.

And to follow-up on this.. Session Manager, I believe is a requirement.

Yes sbc at carrier level will only protect the carrier as JAY points out, you need an sbc no matter if you are pre five and uses ses or indeed session manager, please pay heed to this advice you also need to follow certain toll fraud security ,sip hacking is rife currently , basically people are bombarding badly protected systems with sip trunks finding outcalling paths and causing a lot of pain , listen to your Avaya Disti , they are trying to protect you from being seriously pissed off and themselves with a law suit.
