I am using a laptop with Microsoft Windows to connect with the com port to PORT0 and I'm using Microsoft Hyperterminal. Which pretty much sucks. Especially when it comes to scrolling.
Are there any free software (GPL, preferrably) alternatives out there?
I have used PuTTY before and it works pretty good. It also have a ton of connection options, like SSH, so it is a great multi-purpose tool, and it is free. (At least I think it is)
I am using Hyperterminal PE for switches and it gives me a lot of scroll back. The PE is a free download upgrade to Hyperterminal.
Works perfectly on Meridian Mail also.
procomm is the most powerful communications package offered for interface to any switch.. i do not know a switchman with 20 or more years that would touch dyperterm. if you haven't started using procomm scripts, your missing one heck of a tool.. if i need to change or add a few hundred sets, the data goes from an excel to the switch.. if i need to print 100's of sets or dn's or change names etc, i don't retype them. if a cust has 1000 names on a txt or excel or a 100 scl numbers, procomm will read the file and enter the data.. with capture and scroll, and copy to printer, copy to file.. you can bump your scroll back buffer back to 500 pages, that's about a days normal changes.. enough said, and no i am not the procomm spokesperson, only a switchman that swears by a product that i have used for 20 plus years.. procomm 1.0 beta was free shareware at one time, of course that was early 3.0 dos
I'm not talking about free as in no money. I'm talking about free as in these four freedoms:
* The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
* The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
* The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
procomm is very low priced, but you will not have access the the source code. but for telcom, i can't even think of an improvement that would require a code change. aspect scripting is powerful enough that most of us have even made a dent in it's psooiblities.. i have built scripts that downloads data from a rolm, used a macro to put that in a spread sheet and used a script to put that back into a 81c. the one to move sets from an 11 to a 81 is a lot simpler. i'm not good enough at scripting to benifit other techs, each script requires a knowledge of the switch and tweaking for the project. i learned scripts because i am to lazy to enter data for weeks on end..
check in the aspect forum, someone there may know that. it was originally a dos program that worked inside of windows 3.0 back in the dos shell. after 9x it worked inside windows, telcom side rarely cross paths with linux
I'm still using a DOS Procomm copy on my old Windows 3.1 test pc. It works fine. I've even used it with my Windows 2000/XP. You have to use the "moslo" program if the speed of your pc is 700 or greater (Which is why they brought out the later procomm versions!).
I used to be a Procomm man and still use it but I now find myself more and more using Secure CRT by vandyke software. It supports most everything Procomm does plus ssh, rlogin (which lets you telnet to M1 switches). It also supports scripts. Its about $70 for a single user licence. I dont know about the source code stuff.
about $90 ), and it also does SSH and rlogin, plus telnet - I use it for everything from PBX maintenance to setups on Lexmark print server boxes and Enterasys switches. It's scripting is close enough to ProComm's that I can usually convert you guys' great stuff without much trouble.
