I normally work in printed media, so please forgive me if this seems like a basic question.

What are the primary advantages designing a site in
DW has when compared to designing a site in Flash?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Well, it all depends on what you want to achieve with your site. You need to consider your audience, and their technology in creating the site. If you think your target audience will be mostly using dial-up with legacy systems, then Flash is definitely not the way to go. DW is a great WYSIWYG tool for creating HTML webpages.

Flash is great for presenting artistic and interesting visuals, however, I caution you that some people will simply not wait for it to load. For example, although I work on a T3 connection (8081K throughput), and have the best PC technology available to me, I *always* skip the Flash sites. The look great, but I just don't have time to look through them. Straight text HTML loads way faster.

To sum up, the advatages/disadvantages lie in your needs, and your target audience.

Thanks for your advice.

If the Flash site only uses simple navigation/minimal animations, will it still necessarily take significantly longer to download?

Also, with regards to updating a website, is one program better than the other? (primarily updating text content and perhaps a few thumbnails images)

IMHO... Correctly optimized Flash sites and movies do not take an excessive amount of time to load. I have seen full blown Flash web apps that are lightning quick. (just venture throught Macromedias Site of the Day page)

Unfortunately the internet is full of Flash sites that weren't correctly optimized.

That said... Even a very simplistic site done in Flash or Dreamweaver needs to be optimized for file size and delivery time. Junglist is absolutely right that your audience should dictate the method.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!

not forgetting of course that Search Engine Spiders cannot read flash files. So you are very limited if you are selling a product and trying to promote it.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

Regarding search engine spiders, I never knew that. Cheers!

Thanks for the tips guy - keep them coming!

You can always add meta tags and/or descriptors to the html page containing the flash movie to compensate for the spider issue.
