Occasionally I have seen these ` (back ticks) used. I can't seem to replace them with a regular single quote, etc. So, I was curious as to what they do, when they are used, etc.

Can anyone explain this simply?

Thanks,
Gary

I learnt (still going!) perl using a few online resources-

good:

not tried this one:

whilst referencing to the learning perl O'reilly book. I found that it helps to have a problem to solve rather than just learning it straight up. Also, tsdragon is right, make it simple initially and then work on extra features. Don't try and do everything all in one go.

I talked to my boss about doing a perl tutorial and he likes the idea. So I guess I'd better start outlining how I'm going to do it and start setting it up. I'll post a notice here as soon as it's available.

Tracy,

Well, ... if you'd like to use me as a guinney pig (which I make a good guinney pig), I'd be happy to help guide you through this.

If you can, make it somewhat interactive ... meaning, where you might build a place on the page for someone to enter code, then have their code run and generate output, etc.

That may be asking too much, but an interactive situation would be outstanding.

But, I'd love to help by being the person you use to test it on as you go.

Thanks, and let me know,
Gary

Gary, Actually, allowing the student to run code on the site is one of the things I've been thinking about. There a quite a few security issues to worry about before allowing that to happen, but I think I can handle them. It'll take me a little while to get it all thought out and set up though. I'll keep you in mind as a beta tester (aka "guinea pig"). Thanks for the encouragement.

Actually, Tracy, I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig either, although I'm semi-versed in Perl.

Tracy,

Now you have a dummy (ME) and a non-dummy (BRAD) testers - ready, willing and able.

We'll be waiting.

Please email me at webmaster@garymgordon.com as soon as you have something ready to be reviewed.

Thanks again,

It's turning out to be a lot more complicated, and a lot more work, than it originally sounded, but I'm still going to do it!

Thanks all for the encouragement! :~/ Tracy Dryden
