Hi guys..

I posted on "tek-tips win 98/95" forum a few days ago, about not being able to access "My computer," the error message I got was "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in moduale <kernell32>" actually, in the begining it was "moduale <unknown>"

I fouond those errors
It tells me that I have a damaged .cpl (control panel file), to resolve the problem, it tells me to seach for all my .cpl's, check them, the one that gives me the eroor to delete it, and replace it with a good one from my 98 CD...

Here's my problem, it tells me to type *.cpl. in the named box, and look in c:\windows\system\ folder, but when I do that the magnifying gass thing does not even move to tell me it is searching. I've tried .cpl & .cpl. noting for either, I searched c drive also. it searches, but sinds nothing?

I have windows 98 first eddition, does anyone know why I can find nothing, or why it will not even search??

Jason1974,

That article seems to nail it pretty well. Are you giving your system enough time to return the information that you're looking for?

And it's [red]*.cpl[/red] in the 'Named' field.

Tank you wishdiak, I just did it, and it found 21 .cpl's, I put the wrong named in, a little dot makes a huge difference!

Thanks again...

I doubt that it is hard to tell, but when it comes to fixing things on the computer my knowledge is very limited.....

3 questions:
If and when I do find the damaged .cpl file
1. how do I rename it, or delete it?
2. Is it better to rename it or delete it? And
3. how do I find, then get, and then install that replacement .cpl on the 98 CD?

thank guys in advance

Jason1974,

To answer your questions,
1. You should be able to right-click the file name in your search window, and click either rename or delete.
2. My personal opinion is that it's better to rename than delete. You can always delete it later when things are back in order.
3.
Knowing where to look for help is half the battle, to mis-quote G.I. Joe.

To test each file you can Right click each file , one at a time, and choose "Open with Control
Panel" (they're all in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM)

To make the extraction a little easier than the MS site mess
1] Start >> Run SFC
2] choose "Extract one file from Installation disk"
type the Filename in the box (ex.Desk.cpl) for the Display properties
Applet.
3] click "Start"
4] In the "Restore from" Box - Browse to E:\Win98 folder on CDROM (If E: is the CDROM drive letter.....or type E:\Win98 in the box (must be Win98 directory though)
5] In the "Save File in" Box - Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (though it
probably will automatically appear, as it will with 'certain' files)
6] Click OK....done

Wash, Rinse, Repeat [smile]

Thanks gentlemen, I'm more cofused now though, I right clicked all the .cpl files, did the "open with control panel," and they all opened no problem, so I thought maybe it was a "hickup," so I went to settings/control panel, yep, got an explorer... illegal operation... when I clicked details

"EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff9d709.

Open ALL the .cpl files one by one and click on EACH tab for EACH .cpl applet....you may get an error that way. Start with Desk.cpl

Out of time tonight, but will do that tomorrow, thanks man.

you got it!
Be sure and let us know how you make out....See -- when you open each applet, you're only viewing the first of - up to 5 or 6 - tabs , any one of which may be a corrupt part of the applet. However, this may or may not be the issue....so - we'll get it anyway..[thumbsup2]

I did that, and she worked fine, would safeguard pop-up blocker be doing this?

I think I've heard that it could be causing some problems;
Try Start >> Run MSCONFIG
and click Startup tab ...and look for an entry that refers to your proggie and Uncheck the box and restart when prompted, and try it out.

you know google's toolbar has a built in popup blocker and so does Mozilla..(I'm using mozilla right now...not one popup yet ) [smile]

Ahh that would be it, well safegaurd is gone, I did get the google toolbar, but as I said when it comes to fixing these errors my know how is limited, I wont forget, once I do it but never fooled with the registry before, so 2 questions...

1. how do I create a blank REG file? And,
2) How do I then run it to add it to my registry?

Sorry for my ignorance...

Start your Copy and Paste at REGEDIT4
and leave one last BLANK line, at the end of the file, after the last line of text. (an empty carraige return).
Paste it into any NotePad file and File >> Save As GuardKiller.txt
once saved Right click and choose "Rename"...and take away TXT and add REG.....so it becomes GuardKiller.reg
Now Right click that .reg fike and select "Merge"
that's it

Right click this as practice only (no harm will come) just to view a reg file.
and choose "Save Target As" and browse to save it in My Documents.

Now navigate to My Documents and find the file and Right click and choose "EDIT" and NotePad will open it for you to view.....DO NOT choose "Merge" unless you want to import a REG file into the Registry. Even if you accidentally do choose wrongly no harm will come.
(Use your cursor arrows on Keyboard to go to bottom of file.....notice the blank spaces at the end?
Close the file when done viewing......heck you can even Rename it if you like......A REG file is a Text file , until you change the extension from .txt to .reg (When it has .reg extension, the Right click choices are different, you'll notice). you can even change/rename it to ANYTHING.txt and leave it alone and it couldn't harm you(if it was harmful)...until you change the extension to .reg

NOTE: If you have your mouse set to OPEN on SINGLE CLICK....be careful with certain file types....a .REG file will ask for confirmation though before it "Merges" into the Registry
