What alternatives to clusters are out there?

Clustersing seems a bit complex. I keep hearing horror stories about getting apps to run correctly in a cluster environment Are there other options? What about virtual operating systems running on more than 1 physical box?

You want a point in time solution, not an up to the minute or roll forward solution. Snapshots come to mind. You could snap every two hours retaining the last three snapshots to meet this requirement. If you want, you could replicate the snapshots to a DR site to provide further redundancy. I work for a storage vendor and do a lot of designs just like this.
