I have a Antec Plus 1000 server case with an asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard fitted.I had a 40GB IDE drive running windows XP Pro. I have removed the IDE drive fitted a single WD 120GB sata and when I switch on the sata drive shows as the 3rd master IDE hard disk.
Booting and not going into the BIOS setup, monitor shows AGP card details, then

Any help would be appreciated as I have spent 3 days of my holidays trying to fathom out the problem much to my partners dismay.

Have you set the SATA disk up in its own bios settings (I get a press F4 or Ctrl+S prompt displayed on the POST screen to gain access to this - before the 'normal' POST screen where you'd press del to get into bios settings)?

wolluf
(I dont get a press F4 or Ctrl+S prompt displayed on the POST screen to gain access to this - before the 'normal' POST screen where you'd press del to get into bios settings)?.
Have pressed F4 on Post Screen just gives me the added message "Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected Boot device and press a key" followed by:
Remove disks or other media
Press any key to restart.

Do I only need to connect the SATA power cable to the drive and not the legacy ATA at the same time?.

When I set mine up (have only done 1 so far!) - I followed syar2003's instructions faq779-4641 (which suggests starting by disconnecting everything else).

xyorkie !
Thats absolutely right if you connect the sata drive
to the ICH5 controller instead of the promise controller.

This MB has 4 SATA connectors ,a set of 2 for promise controller ,and the other set of 2 for the Intel controller .
Both is able to run a primary RAID0 Array ,
It's your choice who to use.
"The promise controller can be disabled in Bios"

I have connected my SATA to the SATA1 connection on the mobo, not to the SATA_RAID1 is this OK?
I only have XP Pro on one CD and SP1 on another, is this a problem?.
Can I still set up a RAIDO even though I have only one drive?. I must try and find out some information on this as all I have read so far talks about having multiple drives. All confusing for a novice like myself.
I have just been reading the mobo manual and it talks about setting up 2 IDE drives and 2 SATA drives. I just want to install XP on the (SINGLE)SATA and when funds allow it buy another 120GB SATA and setup a RAID configuration. Is my thinking OK?.
Will now read syar2003's instructions FAQ779-4641 and see if I can make any progress. Any further tips would be appreciated.
Thanks for the help so far. At least now I think there could be light at the end of the tunnel even though it maybe a long one.

Hi !
Yes a RAID is a set of 2 or more disks .
You can't setup RAID 0 with one .
A RAID0 takes e.g two disks of 80GB and forms
them in to one 160GB "disk" .

In your faq779-4641 under first steps in common BIOS
In Integrated peripherals setup menu under onboard PCI device, enable Serial ATA controller.
On my mobo under Advanced I have set the onboard Promise Controller to enabled and the Operating mode to RAID the other option is IDE. Is this correct?.

This faq was written for nForce2 boards .

It depends on what port you connect your sata drive.

As i investagated yesterday you have two ports using promise
and two ports using intel ICH5 controller .

If you connect the disk to Promise port i think
you shall have Promise controller enabled but not
RAID modus but IDE (as you have single drive ) .

My SATA drive is connected to SATA1.

Have looked at faq779-4641, In section "Check if SATA drive is connected" I get no display Press ctrl+s.
In the BIOS setup the sata drive is detected as third master.

I reconnected a IDE drive with XP on it and booted up and the system fuctions OK. I can copy files to the SATA drive and format it. I'm assuming that this means the drive is OK????.

I disconnect the IDE drive boot up,
Booting and not going into the BIOS setup, monitor shows:

Again the faq is written for nForce motherboard
so it's not excatly identical for your setup .

Then i assume intel ICH5 controller is host for SATA1 .
So it's correct that promise controller doesn't detect .

It's then detected as 3rd master IDE hard disk .

You will then have to set boot order to
1) Floppy
2) CDROM
3) 3rd master IDE hard disk

Have SATA drivers on the floppy .
XP-cd in the cdrom .
Boot system without the old HDD connected (just the SATA disk).
XP-setup starts.
Press F6
Put in floppy when asked , press S
select SATA driver Intel ICH5.
Continue with xp setup.
Delete partitions / create partition format and install on the sata disk (FAT32 or NTFS your choice , i recommend NTFS).
Rest of the procedure is standard stuff.
(complete xp installation ,turn on xp firewall and install drivers from mobo CD, run windows update) .

Xyorkie,
Did you fix your SATA issue? I have a similar problem as yours. Just wondering what procedure you followed.
Thanks

xyorkie,

Were you able to figure out the problem. I seem to be in the same boat as you.
