Do the 500GB MyBook Essential (WDH1U5000N) and Home (WDH1CS5000N) editions have the same drive inside? Do they use Perpendicular Recording technology? Are they reliable?

Thanks for the quick response, JimInKS. I hope someone will still comment on the difference between the internal drive with the Essential and Home editions and whether they use Perpendicular Recording.

I believe the perpendicular recording technology is by Seagate, at least they were the first. Personally, I would buy the drive I wanted, and then install it in a decent but cheap external housing. Backup software is readily available for free (or really cheap), and you'll know exactly what you've bought.

I remember reading reviews of the MyBook series, the only one that got rave reviews was the Pro edition.

After perusing the WD site I left more confused than when I arrived. Why don't they just specify which drive is in the dang box??? Makes me feel they're hiding something...

I just had a post on here about mine dieing. Plugged it in and drive spins up for two seconds and the power shuts off. Can't open the thing up to see if its the drive or the enclosure that causing the problem. Plus I would like to get my data off of the drive before I send it back on RMA.
